House of Horrors in France: Over 100 Cat Corpses Found in Homeowner’s Fridge

In a chilling discovery in La Roquette-sur-Siagne, near Cannes in Southern France, police uncovered a macabre scene in what has been dubbed a “house of horrors.” More than 100 deceased cats were found stored inside a refrigerator by a 66-year-old man, who claimed he wanted to grant his pets eternal life. The discovery was made after animal protection group workers were alerted by strong odors and the sound of numerous cats meowing from the premises, leading to police involvement.

The British newspaper “Metro,” reported that upon inspecting the home, law enforcement found dozens of cat corpses tightly packed in the fridge. The homeowner, who believed he had done nothing wrong, expressed his desire to let his cats “rest in peace” by preserving their bodies post-mortem.

Further investigations revealed an additional 38 cats, including 12 kittens and a pregnant one, barely surviving in and around the squalid conditions of the house. Many of these living cats showed signs of malnutrition and various injuries.

The French animal protection group had been monitoring the situation since December, following previous complaints about animal mistreatment at the same location dating back from 2019 to 2021, where 58 cat corpses were discovered earlier. After gathering sufficient evidence, the authorities were notified, leading to a search warrant and the eventual raid of the house.

The man was arrested and interrogated overnight but was later released under judicial proceedings. The case has shocked the local community and highlighted significant concerns regarding animal welfare and the mental state of the homeowner.

This case brings to light the complexities surrounding animal hoarding and the importance of mental health support for individuals displaying such behaviors, alongside the need for vigilant animal welfare protection measures.
