Microsoft Tests Extension Support in Edge Browser for Android

Microsoft is pioneering a significant update for its Edge browser on Android devices, as observed in the latest beta version, this update introduces the ability for users to install additional extensions, similar to the desktop versions of Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers, extensions offer numerous benefits and enhancements not originally available in the browser.

Beta Testing and Official Release

The extension feature is currently undergoing a trial period in the Android version of the Edge browser, it is scheduled for a wider release to all users in the stable version by March of the upcoming year, this move aims to enhance user experience by providing additional functionalities directly within the browser.

Managing Extensions in Edge

Users can manage their browser extensions by tapping on the Extensions icon located in the options menu, this action reveals a full-screen display featuring recommended extensions for installation, among these are uBlock Origin for ad blocking, Dark Reader for applying a dark mode across websites, and Global Speed for adjusting audio and video playback speeds.

Compatibility and Unique Approach

Edge’s Android version is built on the Chromium engine, the same foundation used by Google Chrome, however, Google has yet to introduce such a feature in Chrome for mobile devices, possibly due to concerns over ad-blocking extensions that could impact its advertising revenue, meanwhile, Mozilla has fully supported extensions in its Firefox browser for Android since last year, offering users hundreds of extensions across various categories.

A Step Forward for Mobile Browsing

By testing the integration of extensions in its Android browser, Microsoft is taking a significant step forward in enhancing mobile web browsing, this feature aligns with user demands for more personalized and efficient browsing experiences, it also sets Edge apart in the competitive browser market, especially among users seeking greater customization and control over their web interactions.
