These voluntary commitments include creating a method for consumers to influence the content created by emerging technologies, such as adding watermarks, as well as engaging independent experts to evaluate the safety of their tools before releasing them to the public.

The companies have also committed to sharing information about best practices in the field of AI, providing assurances to other industry stakeholders and governments, and allowing third parties to research and report security vulnerabilities in their systems.

They must report on the limitations of their technology and provide guidance on the appropriate use of AI tools, moreover, they need to prioritize research related to the societal risks of artificial intelligence, including issues of discrimination and privacy, the aim is to develop technology that assists in addressing societal challenges, such as climate change and diseases.

Security has been a major concern in the world of artificial intelligence since OpenAI’s release of the chatbot GPT-3, which can generate sophisticated, creative, and interactive responses to simple text inputs.

Tech companies and major investors are pouring billions of dollars into large language models that underpin what is known as generative artificial intelligence.

In an open letter last May, industry experts and leaders raised concerns about the “extinction risk due to artificial intelligence” and called on policymakers to treat technological risks as they do with pandemics and nuclear war.

The recent commitments made by the tech giants are part of President Joe Biden’s efforts to ensure the responsible development of AI with appropriate safeguards, without hindering innovation.

Congress is currently deliberating on regulations related to technology, implementing the standards may take months or years, as lawmakers continue to learn from experts about how the technology works and the related risks.

Expected attendees at Friday’s White House meeting include Adam Selipsky, CEO of Amazon Web Services; Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic; Kent Walker, Global Head of Google; Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Influitive; Nick Clegg, Head of Global Affairs at Meta; Brad Smith, President of Microsoft; and Greg Brockman, CEO of OpenAI.

The Biden administration has already consulted with many other countries on voluntary commitments and is working to ensure that they complement international efforts in putting protective barriers around the technology.
