Egypt Issues Travel Warning for Somaliland Amid Security Concerns

The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Mogadishu has issued a warning advising all Egyptian nationals to avoid traveling to the Somaliland region of the Federal Republic of Somalia due to escalating security concerns.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the embassy said:

“The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Mogadishu urges all Egyptian nationals not to travel to the Somaliland region of the Federal Republic of Somalia in light of the impact of the unstable security situation on their safety.”

The embassy also called upon Egyptians currently residing in Somaliland to leave the region as soon as possible.

“We urge Egyptians present in the region to depart at the earliest opportunity via Hargeisa Airport,”

the statement added.

Highlighting the limitations posed by the current circumstances, the embassy noted, “The current security situation in the region restricts our ability to provide any consular assistance to Egyptians there.”

Furthermore, the embassy appealed to Egyptians planning to visit any regions within the Federal Republic of Somalia to strictly adhere to the guidelines and procedures established by Somali federal authorities. “We also urge Egyptians wishing to travel to any regions of the Federal Republic of Somalia to fully comply with the regulations and procedures determined by the competent authorities of the Somali Federal Government,” the statement concluded.

The warning comes amid heightened tensions and instability in Somaliland, a self-declared independent region that is not internationally recognized. While Somaliland has generally been more stable than other parts of Somalia, recent events have raised concerns over the safety of foreign nationals.
